| What is KeyWord Excavator? | ||||
KeyWord Excavator is a keyword research tool in the sense that it will find you the exact keywords the search engines are looking for. Find most common words, word pairs, word triplets, and even word quadruplets! KeyWord Excavator also provides a wealth of horizontal search phrases, that is, phrases very closely related to your keyphrase or keyword. Last but not least, KeyWord Excavator analyses the top-ranked websites and compiles all the statistics in easy to view tables for comparative analysis. Although I highly recommend everyone to use the data found with KeyWord Excavator for PPC advertising, KeyWord Excavator's main purpose is to expose why your competitors are top-ranked and not you. It's up to you to take this highly valuable data and implement changes on your website so you can out-rank the sites competing for 'your' keywords!
| Where does KeyWord Excavator get its Data from? | ||||
KeyWord Excavator gets its Top Search Results LIVE from a search engine of your choice at the time you put in the request. Using these results, KeyWord Excavator then spiders the Top XX websites in real-time. Gathering all this data in real-time results in up to a minute loading time, but ensures all data is current and extremely accurate. KeyWord Excavator also gets some of its data from various other online resources including but not limited to meta search engines and online dictionaries.
| What is Keyphrase Weight / KeyWord Density? | ||||
Keyphrase Weight is the frequency/concentration of keywords in relation to the total words. Keep in mind that the 'keywords' you enter can be one or more words which is why Keyword Excavator refers to it as 'keyphrase'. Note that we write this statistic as a percentage; however, it can also be expressed without the %-mark e.g. 12.83% is the same as 12.83. The data shown in this column is calculated as follows: Formula: # of Words in the Keyphrase TIMES Frequency of entire Keyphrase DIVIDED BY Total WordCount on Page. NOTE: Simply dividing the Keyphrase Frequency by the Total Words on the Page will NOT yield the correct weight/ratio when the Keyword you enter is a multi-word phrase! Example: Keyphrase: "health insurance". For ease, let's presume the only text on the page is "Many people in the world do not have Health Insurance." (10 words). As you can see our keyphrase "health insurance" appears ONCE on this 10-word page. So you might think 1 out of 10 = 10% while in fact, the calculation is 2 out of 10 = 20% since our keyphrase consists of 2 words. How is this information relevant to me? There is no holy grail when it comes to Keyphrase Weight/Frequency; however, Keyword Excavator shows you the averages of the current Search Engine listings and we recommend basing your own website's Keyphrase Frequency around those statistics. Of course, search engine rankings depends on many other factors but this is in fact an important one. Note that it's a bad idea to compare the keyphrase weight of a SITE against the keyphrase weight of an ARTICLE. Reason for this being the fact that site keyphrase weights are based on more words then just the article. Think of footer text, and various other widgets around the page. To analyze your own website or article, use our Custom URL / Article option in the search form (instead of Google, Yahoo!, or MSN/Live or use the in-page quick-compare feature at the bottom of a searh result page. | Filtered Words
At present, we only have language filters for the English language. If you have requests and are willing to work with us to add non-english language filters, please contact our helpdesk. It's probably a matter of googling the top most common words in your language with the addition of some self-added words based on your own knowledge or experience. For the time being, if you'd like to add non-english words to the word-filters, you can do so by modifying the following files, located in the kws/inc/ folder, at your own risk: commonwords.inc, commonwordpairs.inc, commonwordtriplets.inc, commonheadertag.inc, commontitletag.inc, commonimgalt.inc, commonlinks.inc Click the links below to see the current filter contents:

| Why are some sites showing 0 for all data? | ||||
If a site shows 0 or no data in the research results of the Top XX search engine results, this means the site could not be reach at this time. KeyWord Excavator gets all it's data LIVE the moment you put in the request. If a website is down for any number of reasons, we can't get the data and 0 or no data will be shown.
| Search: allintitle | ||||
Doing an "allintitle"-search will restrict the results to those sites with ALL of the query words in the title. For instance, [allintitle: health insurance] will return only sites that have both "health" and "insurance" in the title tag (<TITLE>this here.</TITLE>). Personal Tip: Combine this with quotations to discover pages that are directly targeting your keywords, eg. allintitle: "antique clocks" Note: The syntaxis for these operators vary slightly by search engine. If you'd like to play around with these, you can always follow the "Query" link off of one of the research results pages within KeyWord Excavator. | Search: allinanchor / allinlinks
Doing an "allinanchor" or "allinlinks"-search will restrict the results to those sites with ALL of the query words in a link anchor somewhere on the page. For instance, [allinlinks: health insurance] will return only sites that have both "health" and "insurance" in any anchor link tag anywhere on the page (<A HREF="whatever.html">this here.</A>). Note: The syntaxis for these operators vary slightly by search engine. If you'd like to play around with these, you can always follow the "Query" link off of one of the research results pages within KeyWord Excavator. | Search: allinurl
Doing an "allinurl"-search will restrict the results to those sites with ALL of the query words in the URL. For instance, [allinurl: health insurance] will return only sites that have both "health" and "insurance" in the title tag (for example www.learn-all-about-health-insurance.com). Personal Tip: This is a very effective method to find made-for-adsense websites! Note: Punctuation is ignored so a search for insurance/about will NOT only return URLs looking like www.thissite.com/insurance/about/bla.html. The / is ignored and instead the search engine will return all sites with both "insurance" and "about" in its URL. Likewise, the order in which these 2 words occur have no impact on the search results. Note: The syntaxis for these operators vary slightly by search engine. If you'd like to play around with these, you can always follow the "Query" link off of one of the research results pages within KeyWord Excavator. | Error: The PageRank Column displays nothing but spinning circles
If the PageRank column as shown in the Search Engine Top XX Results table displays the spinning circle (loading) image indefinately, it means your server has a PHP Library called "Suhosin" installed. KeyWord Excavator's complex code uses a wide variety of functions that sometimes require a specific option to be enabled by your Web Host. KeyWord Excavator is also very server-intense and not every Web Host will be able to handle KeyWord Excavator. Although we've made every effort to ensure KeyWord Excavator works with a large number of popular Web Hosting Providers, it is impossible to make KeyWord Excavator work without access to certain features. Although Suhosin is nice for increased security, it breaks the Google PageRank functionality of KeyWord Excavator. Please ask your Web Hosting Provider if they can: Increase the length allowed for a GET request value in Suhosin's configuration. This can be achieved by Editing the PHP.ini and adding the following line: suhosin.get.max_value_length = 3000 right below the line extension=suhosin.so (see also: http://www.webhostgear.com/416.html if your webhost asks) Decent Web Hosting Providers will honor your request, however, if they don't, we recommend to look into Kiosk for your Web Hosting needs (the company we're also hosted with).
